Mike Button

Born 1949,
London.

Mike Button had the good fortune to be mentored from the age of 11 by London sculptor Cecil Thomas. Admitted to art college at the age of 14, he studied painting and illustration. Art college and army service were followed by commercial studio work and portrait commissions. In 1969 he was invited to teach at Cambridge School of Art where he taught drawing, painting and sculpture. He was appointed Head of the School in 1983 and took early retirement in 1990 to concentrate on his own work. He exhibited with the Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors, had his work shown in Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and at The Sabin Gallery in Mayfair where his sculpture was selected for ‘The best of British’. He won the R.M.S. Portraiture prize in 2007. Mike’s father was in the Royal Horse Artillery and his love of horses stems from childhood.

He is never happier than when he is making a sculpture of a horse !
